Mom: Alisha Barrett
Home: Caesarea, Ont.
Child: Isaiah, 7 months
Alisha’s beauty wish: “I’d love a fresh, new look—something different from my usual sweats and ponytail.”
“I was breastfeeding during breaks,” says Alisha Barrett, of her first time playing roller derby after welcoming baby Isaiah in April. Nothing was going to keep her from the rink after almost a year off. “I was a little out of shape, but it felt so good to be back,” she says. Her mother-in-law, Carol, travelled with her and the baby from Caesarea to Kingston, Ont., for the game, and Alisha was named MVP.
Anyone who knows Alisha isn’t surprised by her go-getter attitude—almost 10 years ago, she started her career as a paramedic. Soon she found herself working 12-hour shifts and never really knowing what to expect when the sirens went off. “When we get to the scene, it’s about trying to make sense of what is going on in someone’s time of need,” she says. Alisha continued working all the way up until a week before Isaiah’s due date. “It was challenging with a belly in the way,” she says, laughing. Alisha also met her husband, fellow paramedic Kevin, on the job. Before the baby arrived, the couple would work the same shifts and spend their time off together. But when Alisha goes back to work in five months, that routine will change. “It’s just about impossible to find daycare for over 12 hours,” she says, so they’ll likely have to take on opposite shifts.
These days, Alisha is enjoying every moment she has with Isaiah. The two of them go to local mom-and-baby classes, where they do activities like yoga, swimming and baby massage. Once a week, Alisha has roller derby practice for two hours (“I get to leave the house, exercise and socialize all at once! It’s great!”), but other than that, downtime is a rarity.
As for her beauty routine, she likes to keep things simple so she can get going quickly in the morning and spend more time with her family. Our glam squad gave her some handy tips to help her get holiday party-ready.
